I was walking through Rathgar one evening when I was around 16. I remember passing these rolling lawns with mature trees in residential gardens. You could catch glimpses of the lives lived there as you passed.
In one house there was a brightly lit Georgian room with a fire burning, and a string quartet playing, all burgundy evening gowns and black tie. I thought, what a beautiful life.....
Years later I again passed through Rathgar. The whole country had gone through boom and bust and there was a general air of disappointment about everything. The people walking through Rathgar though, still seemed to possess their easy going air. Everything was so solid here. I saw some school kids sauntering along and I thought, what beautiful lives.
And then shortly afterwards I saw something that stopped me in my tracks...
